So here it is – the first image in my “100 Friends” project. First off, I know this isn’t a great portrait shot. The background is busy and there are people walking into the frame. I get. I named this image “Preconception” because as I initially saw this man, I made some premature judgments about him. As I wandered Dundas Square for a few minutes I noticed a lady had dropped a bunch of money out of her purse. Two men and one woman immediately jumped on the money acting like vultures picking the bones off a dead carcass...or so I thought.
To my surprise, the two men chased the lady down returning the money to its rightful owner. Also to my surprise, the lady who picked up a few bills did not join the other two men in giving the money back.
When you think the world is primarily a bad place and you see something like this happen, it gives you a renewed belief in humanity. Even though all the money was not returned, two of the three people did the right thing. In this unscientific study, it leads me to believe there is more good than bad in this world.
Which brings me to this: everyone seems to be doing a “100 strangers” project nowadays. But isn’t the idea of this a bit backwards? Shouldn’t we take time to engage people and get to know a little about them before we take their picture? Wouldn’t “100 Friends” be a more appropriate title for a project like this? So it begins. 99 more friends to go.
