For truly great street photography images, you really need all of the stars to align. There are so many “almost” shots that are just about there. Take this image for example – there are a lot of elements that I think make this shot pretty good. We have the two girls in the posters with interesting looks on their faces, looking innocently while smoking. The other five people in the image are looking in different directions. The bent elbows on the guy in the centre frame, the left poster, and person in the bottom left corner all add to elements of repetition. But there’s no x-factor that brings this to the next level.
What would the x-factor be? In my opinion, the guy on his phone having a smoke would make this shot. As is, the shot isn’t great – but I still enjoy it, which is the most important part.
