Caught in the Act of Stealing

Prior to 1925, the Forbidden City was the Imperial Palace home to China's Emperors. Outsiders were strictly forbidden...hence the name. Today, it is one of China's most popular tourist attractions. Many visitors come to throw coins into one of the many ponds in hopes of it bringing them good luck and fortune.

But with over 1.3 billion of them, you are certain to find some who are are very enterprising. This man (or thief) created this homemade 'magnet on a string' used to collect money that people have thrown into the ponds. I was carefully eyeing him as he stole some coins and fired off a few shots in a fraction of a second.

He saw me out of the corner of his eye and started pacing towards me. Knowing that life is virtually worthless in China (he probably would have slit my throat for 1 RMB), I ran out of the area, put my camera away and changed my shirt. He never caught me and my throat remains in tact.
