I was pretty surprised to see a massive shell of a structure in the middle of downtown Kampot, Cambodia. It looked like a greenhouse in ruins (admittedly, I don't actually know what it was). Amongst the rubble was a tree sprouting from the middle. In a lot of ways, the tree is very symbolic of how the Khmer people have risen from the rubble since the genocide in the 1970's. They've experienced a rebirth in all aspects of their society, having started from nothing. I have a deep respect for the people of this beautiful country and hope that they are able to regain what was lost during the horrific reign of the Khmer Rouge.
