It started off as an exploration into an elementary school undergoing renovations, but it turned into something more. As I was going through my images and researching the history of this school, I stumbled upon some fascinating research into the education system in Ontario, courtesy of the Fraser Institute.
I was particularly interested in the correlation between a school's ranking with regards to parent income level. In the inner city, it was no surprise to see low income schools with low rankings and those with double or triple the parental income appear higher on the list.
Somewhat surprising to me was when I looked up schools in the city where I attended high school. In this instance, there was no real correlation between household income and a school's ranking. Perhaps the sample size was too small, I don't know.
Lastly, the #1 ranked high school (St. Michael's Choir) has 0% of its population listed as an ESL student. Though it is a Catholic school, I found it quite the statistic given its location is in the heart of downtown Toronto. That being said, the #3 ranking school Pierre Elliott Trudeau in Markham has nearly 25% of their population listed as ESL. This being said, the parental income of the Markham students was rather high, making me believe that income and economics plays perhaps the largest role in all of this.
